Let me preface this by saying that I have abandoned as many blogs as I have started.
I have never quite achieved longevity – possibly due to finding it difficult to write only about one topic, possibly due to never gaining an audience for it and thus feeling like the writing was a little pointless. I do write for myself and because I love writing, but increasingly I write for the people around me. I want the things I am writing to be seen and heard.
This is lucky in some ways, because all the advice for self-published authors is to put yourself out there in as many ways as you can – drawing people into your writing by every medium available. So, keen as I am to ‘do this properly’, as it were, I can no longer ignore one of the largest writing mediums available to us in our increasingly online lives.
Thus, a blog. But what does an author blog about? That’s the question I’ve been asking myself. Blogging about ‘your field’ as a writer is – well, all-encompassing. There’s little that it wouldn’t be appropriate to blog about, theoretically. The truth is that I don’t really know yet – I don’t know precisely what I want to say, just that I want to say things.
And maybe that’s enough.
